Local storage of data and similar technology

What does local storage of data, cookies and similar technology mean?

Who else uses local data storage in the Portal?

We use local data storage ourselves and allow our suppliers to do so when they provide their services. These suppliers are subject to data processor agreements and are not allowed to use the data for purposes other than providing the service we have requested. In addition to our own use, we also offer third parties the opportunity to use data storage on your device when you visit our services. We have devised strict guidelines on how third parties can collect and use data relating to our visitors. The guidelines indicate that the data can only be used for clearly defined purposes.

a) To deliver and adapt services to your use

Local data storage is required and necessary to allow you to use our services, such as information about your configuration that tells us how services should be presented in your web browser. We also use local data storage to adapt our services to their best use. For example, to store settings for your favourite sounds, to store information about the best video quality available for your web browser and Internet speed, or to allow the use of special features, such as the option to store classified advertisements or keep previous searches and saved listings.

b) To analyse and improve our services

These tools allow us to recognise the web browser over time and find out if the user has visited the website before and, if so, how often. These tools offer us the possibility of achieving an overview of the number of unique users we have and how they use our services. We also use the information we have collected and analysed to develop and improve our services and cooperative services at Schibsted Media Group; for example, finding out which services generate lots of traffic or seeing if a service is working ideally.

c) Our advertising

We use local data storage in relation to the Portal's advertising activities. This lets us know if and how often the user has seen an ad or a certain type of ads, and how long it has been since he saw it. We also use local data storage to build segments and target groups for marketing purposes and to target specific ads. We also use local data storage on other websites in connection with the Portal's advertising when the user has visited other websites on which we advertise, as well as the local storage of data established by others. This gives us information on the websites the user visited before visiting our portals for example and allows us to target our advertising based on this information. For example, we can show travel ads if the user recently visited an airline website. The information we obtain through local data storage does not contain directly identifiable data. We receive information on the pages visited, but not on who the user is.

d) Third party advertising

As in other commercial websites, included in the Portal services, the user will also find advertisements provided by others. Most actors use local data storage. Local data storage is used to find cookies or anonymous identifiers on your device to find out which ads should be shown or what ads have been displayed in your web browser. Local data storage is also used to measure the effect of ads by quantifying how many users clicked on a specific ad and how many actually completed a purchase. We do not allow these data to be linked directly to the user. The Portal has the capacity to read data from third-party cookies such as these. These companies can use local data storage to target specific advertisements on other websites based on visits to their Portal.

How can I manage data stored locally?

You can adjust the settings in your web browser or use special programs that have been developed to manage cookies. The settings in your web browser usually display a list of all the cookies that have been stored to give you a general synopsis and, if you wish, to eliminate unwanted cookies. However, the cookies that are present on the website change frequently, and not all cookies are equally important. Therefore, the Portal will regularly update the list of available cookies. Also, there are services available that have been specially developed to provide users with an updated list of cookies and other tracking mechanisms. An example can be found at www.ghostery.com or www.disconnect.me. Remember that disabling cookies from the Portal may prevent our websites from working correctly. For example, you may have to log in every time you visit, and you will receive ads randomly instead of the most indicated ones, according to your searches. How to delete cookies:

Click Show advanced settings.
Click Delete browsing data.
Select the period of time for which you wish to delete the information in the menu at the top. If you wish to delete all cookies in the browser, click From the origin of time.
